Vaughan's Tree Protection By-law 177-2025 generally requires a permit to remove a private tree 20 cm or greater in diameter. Three permit types apply depending on the situation.
Trees within a York Region-regulated woodland or woodlot fall under the Region's Forest Conservation By-law rather than the City's Tree Protection By-law. Confirm with York Region whether your property qualifies before clearing a wooded area.
Larger projects that also involve grading, fill placement or topsoil removal may require a separate Site Alteration or Grading Permit. The City is explicit that Site Alteration does not generally apply to individual residential properties, clearing trees and vegetation on their own is a different matter from altering a site's grade, confirm your specific project with the City.
