Storm-Damaged or Dangerous Tree? Call Now
Not every tree problem requires removal. The right next step depends on the tree's condition, location, surrounding property and the reason the work is being considered.
Removal may not be necessary where the concern can reasonably be addressed through appropriate pruning or ongoing management.

Tree size alone doesn't determine the scope of a removal. Access, nearby structures, tree condition, working space, ground conditions and the property type can substantially change how a project needs to be planned.
Trees close to houses, garages, fences and wires, where working space is limited and the removal needs careful control.
Large trees, field-edge and windbreak trees and wooded lots, often with long laneways, uneven ground and more room for equipment.
Trees near the shoreline, docks and cottages, where soft ground, slopes and nearby water can affect access and the removal method.
Broken limbs, leaning trees and storm damage that may need professional assessment before the work method is decided. Rural properties can see more wind exposure than a sheltered village lot.
The appropriate removal method depends on the tree, its condition, site access, surrounding structures, ground conditions and available working space. A tree on an open farm lot may call for a very different plan than one beside a cottage.
The method shown is a planning outcome, not a fixed rule; most projects weigh several of these factors together.
Where site conditions provide enough controlled working space, common on larger rural lots, the removal plan may allow a more direct approach.
Where surrounding space is limited, a tree may need to be dismantled progressively in manageable sections.
Where branches or tree sections can't simply be allowed to fall, controlled rigging may be used to manage how sections are moved or lowered around houses, cottages, fences, sheds, docks or neighbouring property.
Depending on project conditions, lifts, bucket equipment or other appropriate equipment resources may be used to improve access, control or project efficiency.
For many property owners, the biggest concern isn't just getting the tree down, it's protecting the house, cottage, fence, driveway, landscaping and neighbouring property while the work is carried out. The removal plan considers the available drop and working zone, rigging requirements, access, equipment placement, surrounding structures, protected areas, debris movement and cleanup requirements.
An arborist may be relevant to some projects without every removal requiring one. Situations where tree condition or hazard status is unclear, where a tree is close to buildings, water or wires, or where a development application is involved can benefit from a professional assessment.
Tree Craft Ontario works with ISA Certified Arborist expertise and can coordinate arborist assessment and reporting as part of the overall project where useful.
Review tree condition, approximate size, location, access and surrounding property.
Determine the appropriate removal approach, equipment and resource needs, debris requirements and project scope.
Identify whether a City-owned tree, a shoreline or waterway setting, or grading and fill work is involved.
Plan working areas, access, surrounding obstacles and areas requiring additional care.
Carry out the removal according to the selected project method.
Handle stump, wood and debris according to the agreed project scope.
Complete the agreed cleanup and final work-area review.
Tree removal is only part of the scope. Before work begins, the quote makes clear what happens to branches, logs, the stump and the work area.
Defined in your project scope
Chipped or removed according to the agreed project scope.
Removed, cut or left on site where agreed, or otherwise handled according to project requirements.
Options may include leaving it, grinding it, or removal where the project specifically requires extraction and that work is included.
Final debris cleanup within the agreed work area and project scope.
Two trees of similar height can require very different removal plans depending on access, condition, surrounding property and the work included in the quote.
Height, canopy and trunk size can affect labour and removal planning.
Dead, damaged or structurally compromised trees may require a different work approach.
Long laneways, soft or wet ground, slopes and tight village lots can all affect the removal method.
Houses, cottages, fences, utilities, docks and other structures can increase planning and control requirements.
Open-space, climbing, rigging or equipment-assisted work can involve different resources.
Project-specific lift, crane, chipper or other equipment resources may affect scope and cost.
Leaving, grinding or extracting a stump are different scopes.
Chipping, hauling, retaining logs or other disposal requirements affect the project scope.
Every quote is based on the specific tree and property, so photos and a short description help us scope it accurately.

At the time of writing (October 2026), the City of Kawartha Lakes states it does not currently regulate or restrict removing trees on privately owned property, although it has considered new rules. Trees on City-owned land, including road allowances and shoreline road allowances, need a City permit. Properties near water can involve a conservation authority, and work in the water or on the shoreline of the Trent-Severn Waterway needs Parks Canada's permission. Rules can change, so confirm with the City before work, or ask us.
Cost depends on the tree's size and condition, site access, nearby structures, the removal method and the agreed stump and debris scope. Every quote is based on the specific tree and property, not a flat rate.

Yes. The tree and site are assessed first, and the removal method and property-protection plan are built around the tree's condition, access and what is nearby, whether that is a house, a cottage, a dock or wires.
Yes. Larger rural properties often allow more working space, but long laneways, soft ground and slopes can change the plan. We assess access and the tree first and scope the equipment to suit.
Trees on City-owned land, including road allowances and shoreline road allowances, generally need a City permit, so don't cut them without checking. If a tree's ownership or location is unclear, send us photos and we can help you work out who to ask.
It depends on the agreed scope. Stump grinding can be included, left for a later date, or skipped entirely, and it should be identified clearly in your quote.
Yes. We work with rural landowners, builders and property managers on larger removals and lot or land clearing. See our Commercial Tree Removal page, or send us your site details for a quote.
Send us the property location along with tree details or photos. Tree Craft can review the removal scope, site access and any approvals to confirm, and the appropriate next step for the project.
